Spot Details

-Apex Park in Altona is a great spot for both land kiting and kite surfing. In fact it's the one spot in all of Melbourne that has consistent flat water at high tide and has a beach solely dedicated to kite surfing, as it's not swimmable for most beach goers. The beach attracts a lot of sting rays and molluscs such as urchins. There are scattered "soft" spots too with lots of seaweed and unfortunately people's lawn cuttings after a large storm. Never the less, for those more experienced in kite surfing, there is plenty of room and space for kiting, with 200 metres off shore space and almost 2 kilometres of undisturbed beach. Of course you have to share it with other kite surfers.

Land kiting at Apex Park is also possible, but it is seldom done due to the high number of visitors with their canine friends wanting to share the space for free running of their dogs. However, on some days, and especially during the working day, there is little dog presence and the park is very good for land kiting.

Predominantly a E to SE wind is ideal here with around 12knots for land kiting and beyond for those more experienced. Usually if there are kite surfers in the water, then it could also be a good time to try your land kiting jumps and skills.

Watch out for the trees, as they are scatted throughout the park, but the main run further west of Apex park is relatively free of trees. You will be guaranteed an audience with the daily joggers and bicycle riders along the footpath. Also a great strip for land kiting, as long as you are able to jump above and avoid general foot traffic.
